In 2023 GMCA and CSIRO partnered to investigate the potential for managed aquifer recharge in the Goulburn Murray. Managed aquifer recharge, or water banking, involves taking excess water from wet years, and storing it underground in natural aquifers for recovery during dry years, or drought periods. Storing water underground avoids common issues found storing water in dams above-ground, like evaporation, algal blooms, and mosquitoes.
Our partnership and project is continuing in 2024 and the team is developing further project data and information. We have also held three workshops across the region in Benalla, Wodonga and Echuca where a number of organisations workshopped potential projects which are currently being further developed.
