Planning for a Safe Climate

Victoria's Greenhouse Alliances and the Council Alliance for a Sustainable Built Environment initiated the Planning for a Safe Climate project as a result of the disconnect between high-level policy positions on climate change, both by state and local government, and the day-to-day decisions being made. The planning system provides a key opportunity for councils to directly tackle climate change in communities, and to use planning as a tool to restore a safe climate and create resilient communities.

In 2021 the group commissioned Hansen Partnership, an expert planning consultancy, to undertake stakeholder consultation, and prepare an independent report on the key issues, barriers and options for change.

The report, Climate Change & Planning in Victoria, includes comprehensive recommendations for changes to the planning system.
